According to our information (Reporter: Yan Wenhan), “When I studied in Shanghai last year, I had a small regret and hoped I can finish it this year,” said Ismail Miuraj from the Republic of Maldives. It turned out that he came to participate in the Seminar on the Belt and Road Infrastructure Construction for International Talents set up by Shanghai Urban Construction Vocational College (SUCC) last year; he learned to make a Lu Ban Lock which was a concentration of Chinese traditional construction skills, but he could not make it well. This year, he wanted to make a Lu Ban lock successfully and bring it back to the Maldives.

A few days ago, the 2018 Seminar on the Belt and Road Infrastructure Construction for International Talents was opened in Shanghai. Together with Miuraj, a total of 19 participants from the six Belt and Road-related countries, including Slovakia, East Timor, Malaysia, Cambodia, Maldives and Nepal, participated in the two-week training session. Mr. Chu Min, the Party Secretary of SUCC, revealed that two such Seminars had been successfully held before and involved nearly 50 participants from more than 10 countries.

With the Lu Ban School as a carrier, the Seminar integrates traditional Chinese handicraft and culture with modern and advanced architectural techniques. The participants visited ancient Chinese construction works (such as Yu Garden, Suzhou garden, etc.), experienced Lu Ban Culture, made Lu Ban locks personally, and practiced the Lu Ban Skills of China’s construction. On-the-spot teaching will be offered at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, allowing the participants to experience the latest standards of China’s construction; they will also attend the lecture about the Shanghai Tower offered by an expert from Shanghai Construction Group, explore China’s new technologies of intelligent construction, and appreciate the forward-looking and leading technologies of Lu Ban Intelligent Manufacturing.

Why are some participants coming again? Miuraj told the reporter that he visited Shanghai as a government official last year, but didn’t think he had learned sufficiently; He has been working at Maldives Housing Development Company since this year, and needs to learn the building technologies and ideas from China. In his view, Malé, the capital of Maldives, is currently facing housing problems, but there are few high-rise buildings. At present, the building that their company is building is the highest in the area, but it is only 25 stories high. The tall buildings in Shanghai have shocked him significantly. “Although I can’t copy them at home, I want to bring the advanced ideas of China’s construction back to Maldives.”

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. SUCC will also “deliver door-to-door training” for the countries associated with the Belt and Road. “SUCC is planning to open Lu Ban Schools in ASEAN countries and Eastern European countries.” Mr. Chu Min told the reporter. The Continuing Education School of SUCC will continue to dispatch a team of teachers to distribute professional courses, which will radiate more backbone personnel of the local construction industry and better serve the “going-out” of the construction industry in Shanghai.
